SIT stands for Special Investigation Team. It is an investigating agency , which is appointed to investigate specific cases.

"The special investigation teams , or SIT are teams of police officers in Indian law enforcement, comprised of individuals who are trained to investigate most serious criminal case.

The SIT came into existence when it is found that existing agencies are not believed to be in a position to conduct an appropriate investigation in the matter.

Do you know, why an investigation team of special investigators is requested or appointed? it's when it's found that the existing agency isn't able to conduct a proper investigation into the situation or in case it is lodged against prominent individuals who might influence an investigation by the existing agency.

Since there isn't any statute in the constitution to specifies the nature of the investigation that can be assigned to an investigation team.

When a case is filed before the court, and the authority realize that the existing agencies aren't going in the direction due to many reasons such as biased corrupted, insufficient resources such as ted-tape... The court is able to appoint a team of experts to examine the matter and submit a report.

Gujarat riot case and the 1984 anti-Sikh riot case are some of these cases that are being investigated by SIT.

The special investigation team is appointed through the high court of India or by the state government.

The team examines the situation and prepares a report for the judge for the court.

The report is scrutinized at all stages of appeal.

The court has the authority to decide whether or not to accept the report.

If the report is not accepted or rejected, the appellate court has to decide on the outcome of the case.

CBI is an executive agency created under Delhi Police special Establishment Act Whereas the SITs(Special Investigation Teams) are temporary organizations that are established from time to time for investigation of grievances or issues. SITs could be created by Judiciary and the Parliament or state legislatures. Their mandate is to decide on a case-by-case fundamental.

Eg. SIT on Black money as per RTI Act by Supreme Court.
